A monumental entrance gateway tower located at the perimeter of Dravidian temple complexes, adorned with sculpture reliefs.
Historical background
Gopuram construction and decoration became increasingly elaborate under successive South Indian dynasties, and by the Vijayanagara and Nayaka periods these gateway towers had often become taller and more visually dominant than the temple's original central shrine — a genuine architectural inversion historians find significant for understanding shifting patterns of royal patronage.
