Historical background
The vimana's height and tiered complexity became, in many South Indian temple traditions, the primary symbol of royal patronage — the Brihadeeswarar Temple's vimana at Thanjavur, built under Rajaraja Chola I, was for centuries among the tallest temple towers in India, a deliberate statement of Chola imperial power alongside its religious function.
