The Dravida style's massive gopuram gateway towers, which grew progressively larger and more elaborate over centuries (often eventually dwarfing the much older, smaller central vimana they surround, as at Madurai's Meenakshi Temple), reflect an evolving South Indian temple-building tradition where the whole complex became the primary architectural statement.
