Working alongside the munhiyans spy network, the shahna-i-mandi was part of Alauddin Khalji's genuinely comprehensive market-control system — historians studying medieval state capacity often cite this apparatus as evidence that direct, detailed economic regulation was administratively achievable in medieval India when a ruler prioritised it strongly enough.
