Historical background
Mandapas grew progressively larger and more architecturally elaborate over the centuries in many South Indian temple traditions, sometimes multiplying into several distinct mandapas serving different ritual functions within a single temple complex — a development linked to temples' expanding role as centres of community gathering and public ritual.
