Tankha Jagir (तनख़ा जागीर)

English

PeriodMughal Empire Exam importanceHigh

Land revenue assignments granted to Mughal mansabdars in lieu of cash salaries, subject to periodic transfer every few years.

Understand it like this

The deliberate impermanence of tankha jagirs — regularly reassigned rather than held indefinitely — was a specific design choice to prevent mansabdars from building entrenched, hereditary regional power bases, in direct contrast to the much rarer, permanent altamgha and watan jagirs.

How does NET distinguish Tankha Jagir from Watan Jagir and Altamgha?

Tankha Jagir was TRANSFERABLE, reassigned periodically as salary; Watan Jagir was HEREDITARY, tied to a family's native territory; Altamgha was a PERMANENT grant. NET tests matching each Jagir type to its transferability — rotating, hereditary, or permanent.
