Historical background
Alauddin Khalji's market-control apparatus, including the munhiyans spy network, is considered by economic historians one of the most ambitious attempts at direct state price-control in medieval Indian — possibly medieval world — history, and its relative success (contemporary chroniclers describe remarkably stable Delhi grain prices during his reign) remains a subject of historical interest.
