Samiti (समिति)

A folk assembly of the entire tribe or common citizens in the Early Vedic period, exercising electoral voice over the tribal chief (Rajan).
Historical background
The samiti's apparent decline in importance from the Early to Later Vedic period — it is mentioned far less in Later Vedic texts — is often read by historians as textual evidence for the broader shift from more participatory tribal governance toward increasingly centralised, hereditary kingship over the course of the Vedic age.
