Historical background
As the earliest and least institutionally specialised of the Vedic assemblies (predating the more defined sabha and samiti), vidatha's exact functions remain more debated among historians than those of the later bodies, precisely because it is attested in the comparatively sparse and often ambiguous hymn-material of the Rig Veda itself.
