The word sabha's shift in meaning — from a general Vedic assembly of elders to a specifically Brahmin landholders' body in Chola-era brahmadeya villages — is a useful illustration of how the same administrative vocabulary could be reused across very different periods and regions while taking on quite different social compositions and functions.
