The zamindar category covered an enormously broad range of actual social positions — from powerful semi-autonomous regional rajas to comparatively modest local landholders — a diversity that later British colonial administrators, in creating the Permanent Settlement, controversially flattened into a single simplified legal category with major long-term consequences for Indian agrarian history.
