Jangamas occupy a distinctive social position in the Lingayat community founded by Basava in 12th-century Karnataka: unlike Brahmin priests in mainstream Hindu practice, Jangamas rejected caste hierarchy and Vedic ritualism, instead emphasising direct personal devotion (Bhakti) to Shiva (worn as the Ishtalinga) — making Lingayatism one of the most socially radical Bhakti movements of its time.
