Poligar (पोलिगार)

English

PeriodVijayanagara & Post-Vijayanagara Exam importanceHigh

Regional military chieftains or territorial palaiyakkarars in South India holding fortified estates (Palayams) under Vijayanagara and successor states.

Understand it like this

Poligar chieftains persisted as a real regional power well beyond the decline of Vijayanagara itself, and several poligar-led uprisings against British colonial authority in the late eighteenth century (such as the Palayakkarar wars in Tamil Nadu) are counted among the earliest organised armed resistance to British rule in South India.

How does NET distinguish Poligar from Nayankara and Amaram as related terms?

Poligar (from Palaiyakkarar) was the specific TITLE for a local military chieftain holding Amaram-type tenure under the Nayankara system — NET tests recognising Poligar as the holder's title, distinct from Amaram (the tenure type) and Nayankara (the wider system).

This comes up a lot in the exam
