The historians’ term for the re-emergence of cities in the Gangetic plains from around the 6th century BCE (the “first” urbanization being the earlier, separate Indus Valley Civilization), associated with iron technology, trade, and the Mahajanapadas.

The term deliberately signals continuity-with-a-gap: the First Urbanization (Indus Valley Civilization) had declined centuries earlier, and cities didn't simply continue evolving from it — the Second Urbanization represents an independent, later urban revival driven by iron tools enabling forest clearance and intensive Gangetic plain agriculture, not a direct continuation of Harappan urban traditions.
