Historical background
The stupa's origins predate Buddhism itself as a funerary mound form, but its adoption and elaboration as a specifically Buddhist monument made it the central architectural form of early Buddhist art, and major surviving examples like the Great Stupa at Sanchi remain among the best-preserved monuments from ancient Indian Buddhist architecture.
