An ornamental, carved gateway arch at the entrance of a Buddhist stupa or Hindu temple complex.
Historical background
The torana gateway at Sanchi, with its richly carved narrative panels depicting scenes from the Buddha's life, is considered one of the finest surviving examples of early Indian narrative relief sculpture, and the torana form itself later influenced gateway architecture across much of Buddhist Asia, including Japan's distinctive torii gates.
