Historical background
The garbhagriha's deliberately small, dark, enclosed design — a marked contrast to the more open, light-filled mandapa in front of it — is a considered architectural choice reinforcing the sanctum's function as an intensely private, sacred space accessible in most temple traditions to only the officiating priest.
