A small vestibule or transitional antechamber linking the main temple sanctum (garbhagriha) with the pillared hall (mandapa).
Historical background
The antarala's function as a transitional threshold between the sacred inner sanctum and the more public mandapa reflects the broader ritual logic of Hindu temple architecture, which organises space in concentric zones of increasing sanctity — the antarala marking the point where a worshipper moves toward progressively more restricted, sacred space.
