Historical background
The overlapping vocabulary of kudimai and kadamai in Tamil inscriptions has occasionally caused confusion in older scholarship about which term denotes a tax versus a service obligation; more recent epigraphic study treats kudimai as covering a broader category of tenant dues, including labour service, distinct from the more strictly monetary kadamai.
