Vishti labour obligations are recorded in numerous land-grant inscriptions as a right transferred to the donee along with the land itself, meaning the grant recipient — not just the state — could compel unpaid labour from local peasants, a detail historians cite as evidence of the real social burden land grants could place on the peasantry even as they benefited religious and administrative elites.
