A major agricultural land revenue tax paid in cash or kind by landholders to the monarch or temple institutions in early medieval South India.
Historical background
Chola-era inscriptions recording kadamai payments, often to specific temples, provide unusually granular data on agrarian productivity and local economic life, and modern economic historians have used long inscriptional series of such records to reconstruct approximate revenue trends across the Chola period with more precision than is possible for most other ancient Indian dynasties.
