A roadside inn/rest-house built along medieval trade and pilgrimage routes to shelter travellers, merchants and their goods overnight — extensively built under Sher Shah Suri and the Mughals as part of their road- and trade-infrastructure investment (e.g. along the Grand Trunk Road).
Understand it like this
Sher Shah Suri's network of Sarais along his rebuilt Grand Trunk Road (Sadak-e-Azam) — spaced roughly a day's journey apart, and often including wells, mosques, and separate quarters for Hindu and Muslim travellers — is frequently cited as one of medieval India's most significant infrastructure achievements, later expanded further under the Mughals.
