Historical background
The devadasi institution's early form — as a respected ritual specialist attached to temple service — differs significantly from the practice's later, much-criticised colonial-era degeneration, and historians caution against reading the two periods as continuous without qualification. Devadasis are also a key link in the documented lineage of several classical Indian dance forms back to temple ritual contexts.
