A strand of Bhakti devotionalism that worships God with anthropomorphic forms, personified attributes, and divine incarnations (e.g., Tulsidas, Surdas).
Historical background
Saguna Bhakti's embrace of anthropomorphic divine forms and elaborate devotional narrative (as in Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas) made it more readily compatible with existing temple ritual and Brahmanical religious structures than the more radical Nirguna strand, which partly explains its different social reception across different regions and communities.
