A hereditary local revenue/administrative officer in the Maratha region, responsible for revenue collection and local order over a group of villages, typically holding land under Watan tenure — the Deccan counterpart to the North Indian Zamindar.

Deshmukhs occupied a genuinely intermediate position between state and peasantry — collecting revenue on the state's behalf while also serving as recognised local leaders whom peasants could appeal to — a dual role historians see reflected in the way early Maratha state-building under Shivaji had to co-opt, rather than simply override, this entrenched Deshmukh class.
