The Watan Jagir differed fundamentally from an ordinary service Jagir: while a regular Jagir was transferable and tied to a Mansabdar's current posting, a Watan Jagir was hereditary and rooted in the holder's own ancestral homeland — a distinction historians use to explain the deep local-power base that made Deshmukhs and Deshpandes so influential (and, later, sometimes so resistant to central Maratha/Peshwa authority).
