Bhudan (भूदान)
English
Vinoba Bhave’s post-independence “land-gift movement” (from 1951), appealing to landowners to voluntarily donate land for redistribution to the landless — an attempt at non-coercive land reform, later extended into the Gramdan (village-gift) movement.
Understand it like this
Though Bhudan collected a very large total acreage on paper (millions of acres pledged over the movement's life), historians and later assessments found much of the donated land was poor-quality or unsuitable for cultivation, and actual redistribution to landless families fell well short of the movement's stated ambitions — making it a frequently studied case of the gap between a moral-persuasion approach to land reform and coercive/legislative alternatives.
How does NET connect Bhudan to the later Gramdan movement?
As Vinoba Bhave's INITIAL land-gift movement (from 1951) that was LATER extended into the broader Gramdan (village-gift) movement — NET tests recognising this specific chronological extension, not treating Bhudan and Gramdan as identical or unrelated terms.
