Bhaga (भाग)

The royal share or regular land revenue tax levied on agricultural produce, traditionally fixed at one-sixth of the total output.
Historical background
The 'one-sixth' figure for bhaga is itself drawn from normative texts like the Dharmashastras rather than uniform practice everywhere, and actual rates varied by region, crop, and period — a reminder that prescriptive ancient Indian texts describe an ideal, not necessarily lived reality. Bhaga nonetheless remained the conceptual baseline against which other, additional levies like kara and hiranya were understood as extras.
