Historical background
Best preserved at sites like Nagarjunakonda and Amaravati, ayaka pillars mark a distinctive Andhra regional variation on the pan-Indian stupa tradition, and their sculptural friezes are a major primary source for Ikshvaku-period Buddhist iconography. Their positioning at the four cardinal points reflects the same ritual geometry seen in other stupa elements like the vedika and torana.
