Historical background
Altamgha grants were an exception to the Mughal norm of periodically transferring jagirs specifically to prevent any single noble building entrenched regional power — by making certain assignments permanent and hereditary, Jahangir signalled unusual trust in particular loyal families, though historians note this practice, if expanded too far, risked undermining the very logic of rotation that kept the wider jagirdari system centrally controlled.

अल्तमग़ा प्रदत्तियाँ मुगल जागीरों को समय-समय पर स्थानांतरित करने की सामान्य प्रथा का अपवाद थीं — यह प्रथा विशेष रूप से किसी एक सामंत को क्षेत्रीय शक्ति जमाने से रोकने हेतु थी। कुछ प्रदत्तियों को स्थायी और वंशानुगत बनाकर, जहाँगीर ने विशिष्ट वफ़ादार परिवारों में असाधारण विश्वास प्रकट किया, यद्यपि इतिहासकार मानते हैं कि यह प्रथा यदि अधिक विस्तृत होती, तो व्यापक जागीरदारी व्यवस्था के केंद्रीय नियंत्रण के मूल तर्क को ही कमज़ोर कर सकती थी।
