Turkan-i-Chahlghani (तुर्कान-इ-चहलगानी)

English

PeriodDelhi Sultanate (Slave Dynasty) Exam importanceHigh

The “Group/Corps of Forty” — an elite inner circle of forty powerful Turkish slave-nobles (Iltutmish’s own loyalists) who dominated Delhi Sultanate politics and kingmaking in the decades after Iltutmish’s death, until broken up by Balban.

Understand it like this

The group's dominance illustrates a recurring tension in early Delhi Sultanate history between the ruler and a powerful slave/Turkish military aristocracy — Balban's eventual, often brutal, dismantling of the Chahlghani after becoming Sultan (1266-1287) is treated by historians as a decisive moment in centralising royal authority away from a semi-autonomous noble faction.
