Historical background
Basohli painting's bold, almost primary-colour palette and distinctive use of iridescent beetle-wing casings to represent jewellery gave the style an intensity that set it apart from the softer, more naturalistic Kangra school that would later develop from it — art historians treat the two as bookends of Pahari painting's stylistic range.
