Historical background
The Deoband seminary's approach — reviving Islamic learning through traditional religious education rather than through Western-style institutions like Aligarh — represented a genuinely different response to British rule than Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's, and the intellectual rivalry between these two approaches shaped much of the debate within Indian Muslim reform movements for decades.
