Elevated, dome-shaped pavilions used as architectural elements or memorial cenotaphs in Indian and Indo-Islamic architecture.
Historical background
Chhatris served both practical and symbolic functions — providing shade and a decorative skyline silhouette while also, in their funerary use, marking the memory and status of the deceased — and their widespread adoption across Rajput, Mughal, and later colonial-era Indian architecture makes them one of the more visually recognisable elements of the subcontinent's architectural vocabulary.
