Tirthankara (तीर्थंकर)

In Jainism, one of the twenty-four “ford-makers” or spiritual teachers who have crossed the cycle of rebirth and shown the path (Jain Dharma) for others to follow — Rishabhanatha the first, Mahavira the twenty-fourth and last.
Understand it like this
Jain tradition holds that Tirthankaras appear across vast cosmic time cycles to re-establish the Jain path each time it is lost — while the first 22 are considered largely legendary/pre-historical figures, Parshvanatha (23rd) and Mahavira (24th) are treated by most historians as genuine historical figures, with Mahavira a near-contemporary of the Buddha in 6th century BCE Magadha.
