Historical background
Amaravati's sculptural narratives, carved almost entirely in white limestone rather than the red sandstone typical of contemporary Mathura, gave the school a distinctive visual character, and its influence spread along maritime trade routes to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, making it an important source for tracing the eastward transmission of Buddhist artistic conventions.
