Satyagraha (सत्याग्रह)
English
Gandhi’s doctrine of active, disciplined non-violent resistance to injustice — literally “insistence on truth” — first practised in South Africa and then as the core method of the Indian national movement (Champaran, Kheda, Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, Quit India).
Understand it like this
Gandhi distinguished Satyagraha sharply from mere "passive resistance": Satyagraha required active moral courage, willingness to suffer voluntarily (not inflict suffering), and pursuit of truth and reconciliation with the opponent rather than simple political victory — a distinction historians treat as central to understanding why Gandhi called off movements (like Non-Cooperation after Chauri Chaura, 1922) even at high political cost, when violence broke his own standard.
