Understand it like this
The American Revolution is often taught as a purely political event, but it's worth remembering it was also the first successful anti-colonial revolt by European settlers against a European imperial power — a precedent later independence movements, including in India, referenced rhetorically even though the underlying colonial relationship (settler colony vs. directly ruled colony) was quite different.
