A Sufi musical gathering or spiritual concert designed to induce ecstatic devotion and spiritual trance among listeners.
Historical background
Sama gatherings were genuinely controversial within medieval Islamic scholarship — some jurists considered ecstatic musical devotion a legitimate spiritual practice, while others viewed it as a dangerous, potentially heretical innovation, and different Sufi silsilas took quite different positions on how central sama should be to their own devotional practice.
