Historical background
Khanqahs functioned as far more than religious institutions — many operated as centres of informal social welfare, dispute mediation, and even political counsel, and rulers across the Sultanate and Mughal periods frequently sought the blessing or endorsement of prominent khanqah leaders to bolster their own religious legitimacy.
