Historical background
Nirguna Bhakti's rejection of image-worship and formal ritual in favour of direct, unmediated devotion to a formless divine gave it an egalitarian character that appealed strongly across caste lines, and figures like Kabir are still cited today as early voices of social critique against caste-based discrimination.
