Historical background
Radiocarbon dating revolutionised archaeological and historical chronology from the mid-twentieth century onward, allowing far more precise dating of organic material than was previously possible through stratigraphy alone, though its accuracy requires careful calibration and has real practical limits for very recent or very ancient material.
