Historical background
The Pattini cult, centred on the Tamil epic Silappatikaram's heroine Kannagi, later spread beyond Tamil country into Sri Lanka, where it remains an active devotional tradition today — making it one of relatively few ancient South Indian religious cults with a continuous, traceable history spanning roughly two thousand years.
