The branch of geology and archaeology studying the layering (strata) of soil and archaeological deposits to determine relative age.
Historical background
Stratigraphic analysis rests on the basic archaeological principle that, absent later disturbance, lower layers of a site were generally deposited earlier than upper layers — a foundational dating method that, combined with radiocarbon dating, allows archaeologists to construct detailed chronological sequences at excavated sites.
