Contemporary physical, textual, or visual evidence produced directly during the time period under historical examination.
Historical background
The primary/secondary source distinction, while foundational to historical method, is not always absolute — a secondary scholarly analysis can itself become a primary source for later historians studying the intellectual history of how a particular period was understood at the time that analysis was written.
