The spiritual jurisdiction, territory, or domain over which a Sufi master (Sheikh) exercised spiritual authority.
Historical background
A Sufi master's wilayat was understood as a genuinely real form of spiritual authority, not merely symbolic — believers sought a living pir's blessing specifically because of the spiritual power believed to reside within their particular wilayat, a belief system that also extended, through ziyarat, to the tombs of deceased saints.
