Historical background
The pattakila-to-Patel lineage is a favourite example historians use to illustrate long-term continuity in Indian rural administrative structures — the underlying local office of 'accountable village head answerable for revenue' persisted through Sultanate, Mughal, and even into British colonial administration under different names.
