Historical background
Terminological overlap between gramani, gramika, and later village-headman titles like pattakila and muqaddam illustrates a genuine continuity of village-level administrative function across many centuries and several very different ruling dynasties — the title changed with the ruling power, but the underlying local office often persisted.
