Historical background
Panchsheel's optimistic framing of Sino-Indian relations was directly tested by the 1962 Sino-Indian War less than a decade later, and historians studying Nehru's foreign policy often treat this gap between diplomatic aspiration and subsequent conflict as a significant case study in the limits of principle-based diplomacy absent a stronger underlying strategic relationship.
