Modern India

Satyashodhak Samaj (सत्यशोधक समाज)

English

A social reform organization founded by Jyotirao Phule in 1873 to empower lower castes, women, and shudras against Brahmanical hegemony.

Historical background

Jyotirao Phule's Satyashodhak Samaj represents one of the earliest organised anti-caste movements in colonial India, predating better-known later anti-caste movements by decades, and Phule's writings — particularly his critique of Brahmanical social structures in works like Gulamgiri — are treated by historians of social reform as foundational texts in the history of anti-caste thought in India.
